Clear acrylic, also often known as Plexiglass, is a shatter-resistant, easily customizable, and lightweight alternative to traditional glass. For signage, it is a popular option for rigid signs that are durable for indoor use and look professional. Many acrylic rigid signs are permanent installations, but the inexpensive cost of acrylic sheets also makes it possible to create temporary signs of this material.
Acrylic is made of plastic polymer, making it transparent, shatter resistant, and lightweight. It is made through a heat transfer process and can be further shaped through similar heat. The acrylic comes in sheets that are cut and bent into the required shape and size.
The sheets can be made in thicknesses ranging from ⅛” to over 1”, with thicker dimensions offering additional rigidity for larger signs. To create the needed shape, acrylic is cut on a CNC router or with a laser cutter depending on the thickness. Both these methods create a clean edge in the acrylic. Acrylic can also be engraved or frosted, helping create products that look similar to etched glass.
For acrylic signs that have text or graphics printed onto them, clear, frosted, and white acrylic are the most common choices. These backgrounds ensure that the colors in the graphics print with truest color accuracy. We also use Pantone matching to further create accurate colors when printing a business logo.
Acrylic letters do not require printed graphics, so they are more often created from colored acrylic in a company’s color palette, for a richer color and deeper color.
When printing on acrylic signs, the graphics are printed directly onto the sign’s surface with UV ink from the design file. Printing can be done in any colors and large scale sizes with wide format printing.
Lightweight acrylic is easy to install. Options are based on where the sign will be placed, and include:
All of these options make acrylic especially popular as a type of office sign, used for door numbers, floor numbers, and more.
Acrylic is most often chosen for its sleek appearance that still comes at an affordable price when compared to similar rigid signage materials like glass or metal. Plastic signs also offer additional benefits as well, including:
With the customization options available for acrylic panels, it is also possible to create one specific to a certain design need or budget with few restraints.
These rigid signs are used in many locations. They are most often considered an indoor sign, as they cannot stand up to weather conditions in the long term. Indoors they will last for more than ten years with only occasional cleaning. This makes them popular for:
Companies both large and small often use rigid acrylic signs for business name signs, decoration, wayfinding signage, and upscale event signage, although almost any graphic can be printed or engraved onto an acrylic sign. It is even possible to create 3D acrylic signage, though there are some limitations.
With more than thirty years of experience in the sign industry, Blue Dot Signs has also invested in the latest sign manufacturing technology. We can. We have licensed and insured installation services that can place your acrylic sign or letters at your business.
Only for a limited amount of time. Acrylic is waterproof, but sunlight and weather conditions can degrade the graphics over time.
Lukewarm water, a soft cloth, and a mild soap when needed are enough to remove smudges and dirt from an acrylic sign. You should never use abrasive cleaners as these will scratch acrylic.
Yes. Heat is used to shape acrylic, so leaving your sign near an excessive heat source or in a hot car can cause the sign to warp.
Any font. Popular standard fonts include Helvetica, Times New Roman, and Impact, but we can cut letters into any font, including custom fonts that are part of your business logo.
Plastic signs are highly durable and will last for at least ten years. This lifespan can be extended if signs are kept indoors, away from heat and harsh sunlight, and maintained regularly with cleaning.
Our turnaround times are fast, but the exact timeline will depend on the size, graphics, and other customization needs for your sign. We can provide an estimate for timing when you contact us.
With care. Despite its durability and resistance to shattering, acrylic can be easily scratched. If it is going to be transported frequently, it will need to be well wrapped and kept away from any sharp or abrasive objects.
Technically, as small or as large as you like. Realistically, you want your letters to fit the space you have available and to be legible from where the viewer will be standing. Our designers can provide guidance on placement and size if you need assistance.
Sometimes, yes. It depends on where the scratch is and how deep it is. If the scratch has gone through the graphics, it cannot be repaired. If the scratch is in an open part of the sign, it might be possible to sand it out and apply a wax polish so the sign looks like new. We can assist with sign restoration, or help you create a new sign if your original one cannot be fixed.
No, but reflective elements can be added to your custom sign if requested. We are familiar with local construction sign laws if you need your rigid sign to be compliant.
