Aluminum Composite Sign Material

Pure aluminum metal has the benefits of being affordable, easily cut and shaped, and resistant to rust and water. Aluminum composite signs take the benefits of aluminum and combine them with stable polyethylene cores that provide additional rigidity and lightness. Signs made of the aluminum composite are able to withstand weather conditions and can be used both indoors and outdoors for up to 10 years. For signboard material, aluminum composite is chosen for its durability.

Options for Composite Material

These signs are waterproof and will not rust, mold, warp, corrode, or delaminate. They have been both wind tested up to 120 mph gusts and freeze tested to ensure they can survive winter temperatures. When printed with UV resistant inks, the colors in the graphics and sign base are fade resistant. The two main brands of aluminum composite sheeting include:

  • Alumalite – This aluminum composite product places a corrugated polyethylene core between two sheets of aluminum that are factory finished with polyester paint. Alumalite weighs 96% less than non-composite aluminum and is available in thicknesses of 6mm, 10mm, 15mm, and 25mm.
  • Dibond – This material uses two 0.012” aluminum sheets bound to a polyethylene core in a continuous extrusion process. The total thickness measures between 2mm and 6mm and an aluminum composite sheet weighs half of a pure aluminum sheet.

Aluminum Composite Printing Resources

Both brands of aluminum composite can be routed into custom shapes or sizes, or be bent around a corner. A CNC router is also used to drill in any holes for mounting to a wall or pole. Alumalite and dibond come in a range of colors, although natural metal is most often used for printing graphics. The metal provides a luminance to the design. Graphics can be applied to aluminum composite, either on one side or both sides of the sign, with:

  • UV Inks
  • Solvent Inks
  • Digital Printing
  • Screen Printing
  • Vinyl Application

The aluminum facings can be finished with a brushed or polished appearance. They can also have a reflective lamination applied so that signs can be visible at night.

Aluminum Composite Installation

To work as either interior and exterior signage, aluminum composite signs can be installed in a variety of different methods. The lightweight of the sign means it can be mounted with limited manpower and without the need to build additional structural support. These signs are often:

  • Wall Mounted
  • Hung
  • Framed
  • Window Mounted
  • Pole Mounted

They can be used wherever a rigid sign is needed and after frequently used for event signage, regulatory signage, window displays, construction signage, and others. Its longevity allows it to be reused, and low weight means it can be carried between events or job sites.
